Attitude (psychology)

Definition according to wikipedia.org

In psychology, attitude is a psychological construct that is a mental and emotional entity that inheres or characterizes a person, their attitude to approach to something, or their personal view on it. Attitude involves their mindset, outlook and feelings. Attitudes are complex and are an acquired state through life experience. Attitude is an individual’s predisposed state of mind regarding a value and it is precipitated through a responsive expression towards oneself, a person, place, thing, or event (the attitude object) which in turn influences the individual’s thought and action.

Most simply understood attitudes in psychology are the feelings individuals have about themselves and the world. Prominent psychologist Gordon Allport described this latent psychological construct as “the most distinctive and indispensable concept in contemporary social psychology.” Attitudes can be formed from a person’s past and present. Key topics in the study of attitudes include attitude strength, attitude change, consumer behavior, and attitude-behavior relationships.

Attitude is an individual’s predisposed state of mind regarding a value and it is precipitated through a responsive expression towards oneself, a person, place, thing, or event (the attitude object) which in turn influences the individual’s thought and action.

Dimensions of Attitudes

Researchers study three dimensions of attitude: strength, accessibility, and ambivalence.

  • Attitude Strength: Strong attitudes are those that are firmly held and that highly influence behavior. Attitudes that are important to a person tend to be strong. Attitudes that people have a vested interest in also tend to be strong. Furthermore, people tend to have stronger attitudes about things, events, ideas, or people they have considerable knowledge and information about.
  • Attitude Accessibility: The accessibility of an attitude refers to the ease with which it comes to mind. In general, highly accessible attitudes tend to be stronger.
  • Attitude Ambivalence: Ambivalence of an attitude refers to the ratio of positive and negative evaluations that make up that attitude. The ambivalence of an attitude increases as the positive and negative evaluations get more and more equal.

The Influence of Attitudes on Behavior

Behavior does not always reflect attitudes. However, attitudes do determine behavior in some situations:

  • If there are few outside influences, attitude guides behavior.

The importance of attitude is that it is the basis for everything in our lives. Our attitude determines how we react to adversity, our ability to grow and to learn, our ability to overcome challenges, and create bonds with others.

“The Five Hazardous Attitudes” are the source of most on-the-job incidents during elevated construction. These attitudes, Anti-Authority, Impulsivity, Invulnerability, Macho, & Resignation, often lead to poor judgment and risk assessment.

Having a positive mental attitude is one of the most important things to develop in life. More energy, better health, a greater chance at success, and an overall happier life all show just how important having the right attitude is.

  1. Take responsibility. Blaming circumstances or others for your attitude is a sure way to a bad attitude—at least one that is at the whim of circumstance. …
  2. Go on a media diet. …
  3. Get enough sleep. …
  4. Control your ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts). …
  5. Limit complaining.

Research has shown that your attitude is the most important factor in determining how well you do in life. Developing a positive attitude demands change. The first step is to face up to the need for changing from a negative attitude to a positive attitude.

Attitudes can form through direct experience, social influence, formal education, conditioning processes, and observation.

About

My mission in life is to help myself this way. By sharing myself with all I find in return what I am looking for. I want to help others to help myself! Does this make sense to you?

If you apply this we all gain. Sharing is caring and growth!

My life has been very interesting and it taught me many lessons. I concluded that my attitude is the most important factor to face life and all its challenges.

It is thru challenges we grow more! It builds character and strong integrity! The fundamentals that builds trust and true love.

I want you to find yourself with this medium. I want you to share yourself with this medium.

For years now I was procrastinating this idea but now is the time to start. Our world needs more people with the right attitude to come together, unite us again, solve our problems, create opportunity, protect our freedoms and heal our mentally ill society!

I am a very simple and basic common sense person and look at only two things, is it good or bad?

Over the years I have been putting a lot of focus on the truth. What is the truth? I believe the truth is reality. Not thoughts or fiction. It is fact and real! Now how can someone be in the moment? Live reality? There is a song by Johnny Cash “Hurt” . It starts “I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel, I focus on the pain, the only thing that is real” Pain you feel. How can Pain be positive? To see that I still feel!

This attitude changes everything!

In order to go thru real life we have to accept reality and not avoid it. What is reality to you?

For me it is doing! Using what I have to place me in that moment where I was meant to be. I am creating my own luck! Why are some more lucky than others? Nobody knows! There are many thoughts about it but if it is not meant to be, your reality is you will not get it! Your attitude is to accept things that are not in your control and if things happen to be you can thank your Luck they did. Accept that you are not in control but do the things you can to position yourself better with whatever you want.

Attitude Exchange can help you to understand how important Attitude is in our lives.

Before anything comes attitude because it shapes everything we do.

Attitude can be trained thru change. The willingness to change thought, emotions and perceptions.

Change comes easy for some and is the hardest for others, but it starts with attitude!

Awareness is the first step in the evolution of change. Thru education awareness is created and change starts in everyones mind.

Only you can change your mind!

People search for happiness and are willing to do almost anything to get it.

What most miss is it comes from the inside and reflects on the outside.

Attitude is your way to show yourself confidence. How do you feel about yourself is the attitude you have about yourself.

Attitude is contagious! It is like a magnet that attracts positive and negative people.

Attitude connects us or repels us!

Here we start a journey to get our attitude adjusted and/or exchanged because we want to reach our true potential inside of us and be happy.

We all have our issues in life and to solve them we need the right attitude first! The first step is attitude on our journey! Take it!
